About Us

Alma Mater is an allegorical expression in Latin meaning 'the nurturing mother', our name is a reference to the origins of the Portuguese language, Latin, and to our desire to nurture the world with our products.

We are based in the city of Covilhã, in the Beiras region of Portugal. The city of Covilhã is characterised by its wool industry and is known as the Manchester of Portugal. It is on the doorstep of the Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain on the Portuguese mainland. The Beiras region is famous for its traditional production of cheeses, sausages, hams, wines, liqueurs and jams, all of which are artisanal and not industrialised, and therefore produced in lesser quantities.

All this cultural heritage is part of us and everything we do, it is our driving force that motivates us to give our best every day.
